Vitalik Buterin Shares Vision On What ETH Layer 3 Could Look Like

Vitalik Buterin shares vision on what ETH Layer 3 could look like.

With the long-awaited Ethereum Merge to Proof-of-Stake finally completed, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has since been turning his attention to focus on the other things he can focus on fixing or improving on the blockchain.

Ethereum’s Layer 3

One of the things Vitalik has seemingly been focused on has been the Layer-3 protocols. While Layer 2’s are all focused on scalability, he claims that Layer 3’s could be much more.

In a recent blog post titled “What kind of layer 3s make sense?”, Vitalik put out his ideas and thoughts, asking for a discussion on what layer 3s of the blockchain could be, as he claims that it would only make sense that this third layer should serve a different purpose than Layer 2.

A three-layer scaling architecture that consists of stacking the same scaling scheme on top of itself generally does not work well. Rollups on top of rollups, where the two layers of rollups use the same technology, certainly do not.

Where Layer 2 solutions are for scalability via rollups, Vitalik suggests that Layer 3 should focus on “customized functionality”.

He explains that Layer 3 could be created by modifying the way that rollups currently function in order to provide better operations for cross-chain transactions.

Ethereum Since The Merge

Since the Merge took place last week, Ethereum has already seen massive improvements in its energy consumption, just like originally promised by Vitalik Buterin.

In fact, Ethereum’s carbon footprint was actually reported to have fallen much lower than was originally expected after the Merge.

There have been a number of reported problems however, like the many complaints that the community had after finding out that the top validators for the Ethereum staking have mostly been big firms like Coinbase.

This issue has caused massive fears of centralization for many in the crypto community, which for now hasn’t been addressed by developers or Vitalik Buterin himself yet.
