YouTube Hires Web3 & NFT Advocate Exec As New CEO!

Earlier last week, after nine years of working as the CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki announced her decision to step down from the position and is now appointing a new executive to lead the Google-owned video streaming platform.

Neal Mohan & Web3

The newly appointed CEO for YouTube was revealed to be Neal Mohan, who had formerly worked as the platform’s Chief Product Officer for the past seven years.

Mohan has been known to be an avid advocate for many things Web3, including NFTs, crypto, and the metaverse. Previously before taking over as CEO, Mohan had been known to be the one responsible for integrating a number of Web3 features like Metaverse-based content experiences and unique digital tokens for the platform back in 2022.

“Web3 also opens up new opportunities for creators. We believe new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans. Together, they’ll be able to collaborate on new projects and make money in ways not previously possible,” the new CEO wrote in a blog post in Feb. 2022.

More Platforms Integrating Web3

Last February, Neal Mohan had previously stated that he sees the incredible potential in the NFT space, arguing that NFTs could be a great “verifiable way for fans to own unique videos, photos, art, and even experiences from their favorite creators.”

Despite this, backlash and criticism from the general public who are still sceptical about Web3 and blockchain technology seemed to have hindered YouTube from bringing these Web3-based features to life. With Mohan’s new position as CEO, however, we could expect to see this to change.

YouTube has also seen some of its former prominent employees, like its former Global Head of Gaming Ryan Wyatt, leave his position in 2022 after 7 years of working at the company, to join Web3-based company Polygon Studios instead.

YouTube is not the only platform to be making plans in creating Web3 features, however. Popular social media app Twitter has also been making a number of new cryptocurrency-based features following billionaire Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
