This initiative called Plan ₿ aims to scale bitcoin and stablecoin adoption and accelerate cryptocurrency usage in Lugano.
Tether Chief Technology Officer Paolo Ardoino said in a statement earlier this year that Lugano and Tether signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate existing payment services with bitcoins and stablecoins.
Ardano said, “We have been working together to ensure the technological infrastructure is in place to support this and today we watch all of that hard work come to fruition.”
So far, McDonald’s, a few art galleries, and other merchants have joined the initiative.
“Paying at McDonald’s with #Bitcoin in Lugano, Switzerland,” tweeted Bitcoin Magazine.

The City Plan to Onboard More Business to Accept Crypto Payments
By the next month, the city plans to onboard more businesses to accept cryptocurrency payments, and will service over 2,000 customers before the Bitcoin World Forum takes place there on Oct. 28 to 29.
Along with onboarding merchants, the initiative aims to accommodate parking tickets, public services, and student tuition with crypto payments. It will also be possible for Lugano residents to pay their taxes with cryptocurrencies.
A multimillion-dollar fund was created by Tether to support the rollout and collaborate with local universities and research institutions to educate younger generations about cryptocurrency.
