Crypto Exchange Backed By Matt Damon Accidentally Transferred $10M To Woman & Realized It 7 Months Later.
In December 2021, one of the biggest crypto exchange in the world, Crypto.com hired Hollywood star Matt Damon to star in its Super Bowl Commercial, found out that they have accidentally transferred the wrong amount fo an Australian woman.
Crypto.com Intended To Give $100 Refund
Crypto.com was supposed to transfer a refund of $100 to a woman by the name of Thevamanogari Manivel in Melbourne, Australia, but accidentally transferred $10.5 million instead in May of 2021.
During an audit done by the crypto firm, the company realized the error 7 months later and now is suing, Manivel and 5 other people who she split the money with, to retrieve the money back.
$1.35 million of the money has already been used to buy a four-bedroom house in Melbourne and is owned by her sister, Thilagavathy Gangadory.
“Extraordinarily, the Plaintiffs allegedly did not realize this significant error until some seven months later, in late December 2021,” the Victorian Supreme Court judge James Elliott wrote in a court ruling.
Judge Ordered Property To Be Sold
Crypto.com has asked the courts to freeze her account and also 5 other people that she split the money with. Since the company has trouble in connecting with Manivel, the court has no choice but to force the property to be sold. Manivel also has to pay $27,369.64 in interest.
