Bluesky, Jack Dorsey-formed Launch Its Decentralized Social Media Protocol

Bluesky, Jack Dorsey-formed Launch Its Decentralized Social Media Protocol.

The co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, announced late 2019 that his company had assembled an independent development team with one purpose: to develop a decentralized social media protocol that would serve as the basis for a new standard of online connectivity, free from the influence of corporations and governments.

“Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard,” tweeted Dorsey.

Launch a Website

The Bluesky initiative has launched a website for its decentralized social media protocol, which is called AT Protocol.

In addition, a waitlist has been opened for the Bluesky app, which the team describes as the perfect “browser” to access the AT Protocol. There was a rapid growth in the waitlist, which required third-party intervention.

“Bluesky is building a social protocol. We released “ADX” (the X stood for Experiment) in May. Now that the design is starting to solidify, we’re renaming it to the “Authenticated Transport Protocol” — the “AT Protocol,” Bluesky tweeted.

AT Protocol is a decentralized network that runs independent of the will of any individual company.

It is Bluesky’s belief that this independence will allow social networks built on the protocol both to protect their privacy and to avoid corporate algorithms that often promote controversy in order to keep users hooked.

“Algorithms dictate what we see and who we can reach. We must have control over our algorithms if we’re going to trust in our online spaces,” wrote the Bluesky team.

An Interoperational Framework, Called Lexicon

Blueky’s mission also focuses on fostering interoperability, or mutual compatibility between different platforms using the same protocol.

Lexicon is an interoperable framework built on AT Protocol that will facilitate connectivity between various apps and networks.

“The world needs a diverse market of connected services to ensure healthy competition. Interoperation needs to feel like second nature to the Web,” said the Bluesky team.
